WELCOME TO GLE 20L    Grade 10 Learning Strategies

  

The course outline will give you an overall idea of what this course is about.

Please complete and hand in the following units to either Mr. Saint Yves or Mrs. MacMillan in order to achieve a credit in this course.

  

  

Unit 1  You and School  Due Feb 24th, 2012 

You will need to complete the following exercise on Learning Styles and read the accompanying information so that you can complete the letter of self-advocacy.

The assignment requires that you use your IEP in order to write you letter of self-advocacy.  You can get a copy of your IEP from either Mr. St. Yves or Mrs. MacMillan.

Unit 2 Literacy and Numeracy  Due March 23rd, 2012

The Literacy and Numeracy unit involves activities that use both of these skills within the same assignment.

Complete both exercises and hand in to your teacher.

 

Newspaper Scavenger Hunt

For this exercise, you will need to get a copy of the Ottawa Citizen or the Ottawa Sun from the classroom.  The newspaper doesn't have to be current.

 

Storm Chasers

Read the article called "Storm Chasers".  Answer these questions:

Jump in questions 1,2,3 and 4. 

For Jump in question 1, here is the line master 3-1 to help you answer the question.  For question number 4, make a comic strip using paper or the Comic Life application.

Unit 3  Goal Setting      Due: April 26th, 2012 

In order to set goals for the short term and the long term, people use the SMART method of goal setting.  We used the SMART method in GLE1O.  SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Acheivable, Realistic and Timeframe.  The following assignment looks at both short term and long term goals.

Using Smart Ideas for Organization - Print off the tutorial for Smart Ideas and follow the instructions given.  Smart Ideas is a graphic organizer program that will allow you to visually organize your notes.   Complete the instructions in the handout and hand in the completed exercise to your teacher.

It is time to organize your binders.  Organized binders allow you to find everything you need to be successful in your classes.  Read the following activity to help you organize your binders.

Open the file below called Ineffective Note-taking. With a partner, answer the questions.

Try to make an effort to model your class notes after the effective note making sample. 

 

Open the link and read one author's theory on how to organize a space.  Answer the two questions and highlight (with a coloured highlighter), the important points from this theory.  Organization article

Unit 5  Summative Due: June 8th, 2012

 

The summative for the Grade 10 Learning Strategies course involve the completion of a portfolio and a transition plan.   The portfolio link will provide you with a list of items to put in the portfolio as well as instructions for each part.  The transition plan link will provide you with instructions for the transition plan.  Each part is worth 15% for a total of 30% of your final grade.

 

A file folder has been created for you which will be kept in a filing cabinet in the classroom.  All completed summative work is to be placed in this file folder.
